Our Logo: The Sankofa is an image of a goose reaching back gathering wisdom from the past before moving forward into the present. The Asante people of Ghana, West Africa employ these beautiful symbols to convey proverbs; spiritual and moral teachings passed down for centuries.
The Sankofa we are using was re-created by Led Bradshaw, graphic designer and author of Jet Pulse Jake Comic Books. What is special about LED's representation are the colors on the image of Africa and in the belly of the goose. These are the colors of the national flags of most of the 54 countries on the continent of Africa. In this rendition of the Sankofa the colors represent our essential character and roots. The color is vibrant and easily seen like our skin color. But, more than skin color we are the essence of mother Africa no matter where we are. We turn back to the “belly” to continue to connect and be fortified by the motherland which remains with us, active and informative.
The Sankofa symbol has been chosen to represent, “Celebrating Our Soul, People of African Descent New Thought Conference” because we honor the core of where we come from and its lasting power that affects how “We Be” today and tomorrow.
New Thought: There is an ever-increasing movement in the world that embraces a non-traditional approach to religion and living a fulfilling life. More and people are studying Eastern philosophies, yoga, meditation, and mindfulness. Some have left the traditional church and refer to themselves as “spiritual but not religious.” Many have moved away from believing in the traditional concept of God as a big man who lives up in the sky, who gets angry, is vengeful, and who requires people to pray by begging and pleading with “him.” In New Thought one may refer to “God” by other terms, such as Higher Power, Spirit, Divine Mind, Universe, Source Energy. One segment of this movement is known as The New Thought Movement.
Every year, leading personal development experts such as Deepak Chopra, best-selling authors such as Mark Victor Hansen, Carolyn Myss and Shakti Gawain and spiritual teachers such as Iyanla Vanzant and Les Brown, speak to thousands of avid listeners. Participants gather at many national conferences to network, open new collaborations with like-minded people and to empower a new vision for a transformed world of cooperation and peace.
The purpose of “Celebrating Our Soul" – A Conference by People of African Descent is to celebrate the fact that people of African descent have survived and have overcome many obstacles. It is to acknowledge that we are thriving and are poised to thrive even more. We plan to come together and learn and share spiritual principles that can be used to improve our own lives and our communities. We realize that in the process, the world will become a better place for everyone.
Scope of New Thought: The New Thought Movement is world-wide with thousands of spiritual centers and ministries, serving millions of people. New Thought teaches that each person has a spark of divinity within themselves and that the Universe loves them and wants the best for them. New Thought empowers the individual to see beyond the limited appearances and see the positive possibilities in life.
New Thought honors all paths to the Divine.
The various spiritual centers and ministries offer a wide range of spiritual services for growth and transformation, classes on empowered living, retreats and classes for children, youth, and adults. New Thought groups have reached out to help build desperately needed schools in impoverished areas, provided resources in foreign countries with books and classes. They have also played active roles in the transformation of our world through participation in the Parliament of World Religions, the International New Thought Alliance, and the Association of Global New Thought.
New Thought opens the way for an empowered world through its centers and ministries and welcome work done by the Spiritual Cinema Circle (“The Secret”, “What the Bleep”, etc.), as well as well-known authors and thought leaders such as Anthony Robbins, Deepak Chopra, Wayne Dyer, Michael Bernard Beckwith, Eckhart Tolle and others.
